Aswan and Nubia

Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town has a distinctively African atmosphere. Small enough to walk around and graced with the most beautiful setting on the Nile, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. Days can be spent strolling up and down the broad Corniche watching the sailboats etch the sky with their tall masts or sitting in floating restaurants listening to Nubian music and eating freshly caught fish.

Here the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants. Explore the souk, full of scent and color of spices, perfumes, scarves and basket, view the spectacular sunsets while having tea on the terrace of the Old Cataract hotel. Aswan has been a favorite winter resort since the beginning of the nineteenth century and it is still a perfect place to get away from it all.

The Nile river in Aswan

When you visit Aswan you can go to the following places you will be surprised of the how many monuments and sites you can visit in a small city like Aswan.

  • Nubia Museum
  • Aswan cultural center
  • Plantation island
  • Elephantine island
  • The Aga Khan Mausoleum
  • The monastery of St. Simon
  • The unfinished Obelisk
  • The tombs of the Nobles
  • Philae temple
  • The High Dam

People in Aswan are the most decent in all of Egypt due to the tranquility of the place and the relaxing atmosphere. They are kind and helpful so don't be embarrassed to ask for directions or information from any body in the street they will be glad to reply.

Tips when being in Aswan

  • The weather is hot in summer and warm in winter that's why the best time to visit Aswan is winter.
  • When you go out during the day don't forget to wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
  • It might be tempting but don't stay in the sun light for a long time to avoid sunburns. A little sun is enough to have a bronze-color skin
  • You can go directly to Aswan from many countries, because the airport there is well equipped to receive many passengers.
